Educator of Secondary Education

For the past 18 years of my life, I have been a Secondary Educator. I have taught in both America and currently in the United Kingdom. Although we share one basic language, we are worlds apart in the way we teach, curriculum and students behavior.

We in the field of Secondary Ed know just how difficult our career choice is yet we still awake each day (give or take) around 6:30 a.m. we rise out of bed, weary eyed, stumbling to find our coffee and begin to get ready for our day. Thoughts pass through our minds; Will "john" be in today? Oh I hope not!, Will I receive support from senior staff when I have a behavior issue? I hope all my great kids are in today, have I done my lesson plan properly, the mind runs wildly with thought and it isn't even 7:00 a.m. yet!!

Over the years, I believe I have seen and heard it all. I have heard every excuse under the sun yet the students still try it on. Over the years, I have pondered many times writing a book about teenagers and communication. I find more often than not, most issues with misbehaved students can be resolved inn a calm conversation.

Listening? Are these students listening to us? Are we listening to them? Listening is an underrated skill. Again, many times, alot of problems arise from mishearing what was actually said. Many times, we heard what we want to hear and our students are the same. (Just in a hormonal little body)

I recently published a book titled: Pick and Choose Your Battles. The book looks at communication, listening and body language skills relating to teenagers, parents and educators. Time and time again, it is the simplest of a miscommunication conversation that causes upheaval in our lessons.

I am an educator because all my life I have wanted to teach. As a small child, I played school with my younger sister but I always had to be the teacher. I am proud to be an educator and wouldn't have it any other way. The advice and knowledge I have gathered in my 18 years has been invaluable to me. I wrote this book to offer guidance, assistance, an ear or support for others.

We are currently using this book in my school and building a curriculum around it which is very exciting. Of course this is in it's infancy stages but I have no doubt it will be a huge success. We are implementing the strategies now and have noted a 35% decline in classroom disruptions!

I know alot of authors make great claims to success, you by the book and think, "What a waste of time and money." I can assure you, you won't with this one!
